ABOUT MAYA

Maya has a busy and thriving criminal practice, prosecuting and defending in the Crown Court.  As a Grade 3 CPS Panel Advocate and RASSO Panel Member, she is regularly instructed in cases involving serious violence, sexual offences, domestic abuse, dishonesty and drug offences. Her practice spans across the entire spectrum of criminal proceedings, from first hearings to appeals.

Prior to coming to the Bar, Maya worked as a Prison Law Supervisor at one of the largest prison law firms in the country. She represented clients across the custodial estate in matters including adjudications, parole hearings and sentence progression. This experience gives her a rare, grounded insight into the realities of the criminal justice system beyond the courtroom and a nuanced appreciation of how decisions made in court affect real lives.

Maya is committed to securing the best possible outcome for both professional and lay clients and often receives positive feedback in doing so.

Notable Defence Cases:

R v J – Maya secured unanimous acquittals on all four counts in a serious grievous bodily harm case, following a four-day trial. Case involved cross-examination of two complainants, one with severe learning difficulties.

R v GJ – Client unanimously acquitted of domestic burglary following a three-day trial.

R v D – Secured a community order for possession of indecent images.

R v A & Others: defended an 18-year-old male with no previous convictions of non-dwelling burglary. After hearing submissions, the Judge departed from the sentencing guidelines and imposed a 12-month community order.

R v S – defendant was charged with stalking involving serious alarm/distress. Successfully persuaded the court to impose a suspended sentence order.

Notable Prosecution Cases:

R v DF – Successful prosecution at trial for Intentional Strangulation and ABH.

R v L – Successful prosecution at trial of a man accused of ABH against his stepdaughter.

R v H – Successful prosecution at trial for serious acts of violence against a Prison Officer.

R v C - Achieved an ABH conviction for a domestic assault which had never received the support of the complainant. The Crown’s case relied solely on the evidence of attending police officers and Res Gestae.
