ABOUT MAYA
Maya became a tenant at Crown Chambers in October 2024 after completing her pupillage under the supervision of Naomi Madderson.
Prior to pupillage, Maya worked as a Prison Lawyer and Prison Law Supervisor at Carringtons Solicitors. She attended at His Majesty’s Prisons (HMP) and Young Offender Institutions (YOI) and represented, advised, and advocated for prison inmates and young offenders throughout England and Wales on all aspects of Prison Law.
Criminal Law
Maya prosecutes and defends in a wide range of matters in both the Youth Court, Magistrates’ Court and Crown Court. She is regularly instructed across the entire spectrum of criminal proceedings, from first hearings to appeals in the Crown Court.
Notable cases:
R v T (2024): Prosecuted a sensitive case of sexual assault and controlling & coercive behaviour in an intimate/family relationship. Successfully made a pre-trial application for special measures and relied on the case of R v Katira [2020] to diminish the defendant’s previous good character. The court convicted the defendant after trial.
R v C (2024): Achieved an ABH conviction for a domestic assault which had never received the support of the complainant. The Crown’s case relied solely on the evidence of attending police officers and Res Gestae.
R v S (2024): defended a client charged with stalking contrary to Section 4A of the PHA 1997. The defendant accepted many of the behaviours outlined by the prosecution and a suspended sentence was secured for the defendant.
R v A & Others (2024): defended an 18-year-old male with no previous convictions of non-dwelling burglary. After hearing submissions, the Judge departed from the sentencing guidelines and imposed a 12-month community order. Maya had represented the individual at the PTPH, and Mr A agreed to enter a guilty plea leading to a great result.
Prison Law
Maya has experience with maximum security reviews, Parole Board Reviews, hearings within the Prison Estate and the revocation of licences by the Secretary of State for Justice.
Family Law
Maya has experience in both public and private law children matters.
Maya has been instructed at all stages of Private Law Children proceedings from the first hearing to contested final hearings covering a range of issues. She also has experience representing parties in Family Law Act applications, dealing with Non-Molestation and Occupation orders. Maya has represented parties in private law matters during final hearings in cases involving issues such as domestic abuse and coercive and controlling behaviour.
Maya also represents parents and Local Authorities in all stages of care proceedings. This has involved allegations of neglect, drug and alcohol misuse, domestic abuse and allegations of non-accidental injury.
Notable cases:
LA v H (2024): Maya is representing a young mother in care proceedings who faces allegations of causing injury to a child and failing to protect. A 5-day final hearing has been listed late into 2024.
B v B (2024): A full-day final hearing with the contested issue being child contact. Maya represented the applicant father and was able to successfully persuade the Judge to follow the father’s recommendations for contact.
